![]() My favourite tool for this is PCMark (downloaded the trial version here). Then it measures to the millisecond how long it takes to complete each task and the collection of tasks. Rather, it requires software that repeats specific tasks at specific intervals. It’s something most people can’t do and get accurate and reproducible results. Measuring real-world performance (such as browsing the web, word processing, multimedia editing) is a tough one. (To get a sense of how I test battery life in the lab, have a look at our AVG performance test center.) All of the reported battery tests were repeated multiple times to improve the accuracy of the results.) Real-world PC usage tests ![]() Most have a “Battery Test” mode, which repeats tasks until the battery runs dry.įor correctly measuring battery life, a simple stopwatch is generally enough, as you don’t need to measure it down to the millisecond. Work: To measure battery life for working productively with your PC, you’ll need to use productivity testing software (such as PCMark, discussed below). Just start a movie or any video and set your player to loop until your battery runs dry. Perfect for simulating a high load on your laptop! (I’ve posted below a list of popular games a benchmark mode.) In the screen above, I started No Man’s Sky and let it sit at a section with lots of moving animals and grass waving in a virtual breeze. If the game doesn’t include such a mode, just leave the game running at a busy section. ![]() Many games, such as GTA V or Gears of War 4, include a benchmark mode once set, it repeats the game demo until your battery runs dry. Gaming: To test battery life, my advice is to fully charge your laptop and then let the game run on loop. By contrast, you can often watch movies or do light text editing for an entire workday before the battery dies. For example, playing 3D games at maximum brightness will drain most new laptop batteries in 45 to 90 minutes. Your laptop battery life varies greatly depending on what you do with it.

That puppy she begged for is now 10 years old, grayer and stiffer, like her father and me. All the family trips, from camping at the Cape to Cape Town, South Africa. The batches of Christmas cookies baked with Granny. The wilted dandelions picked for Mother's Day and served with cold toast and watery orange juice. The basketball and soccer games where she positioned herself as far away from the ball as possible. Those years between were filled with photos of family and friends, some now gone, including three of her four grandparents. For the graduation party, her father and I had put together a slideshow of her life, starting with me hugely pregnant and ending with Megan's senior spring. Somehow, those four years passed like a video in fast-forward. (Life lesson seven: Keep Kleenex close at hand). At the time, I mourned for way too long, imagining our family as a now-gimpy dog whose leg had been amputated. We left the daughter happily ensconced in campus life, not worried much about her parents and brother left behind. Our destination was far away, much farther than the 753 miles that registered on the odometer.įour of us departed Milton, and only three of us returned. It was just last year, I could swear it was, that we had headed south from Milton in my mom-mobile, piled high with clothes, bedding, and expectations. The maintenance man said he'd be glad to have it. We loaded her car, but simply could not squeeze in the beanbag chair, the one we'd bought her the day she moved into the dorm as a freshman. We returned to her apartment to clean up the flotsam and jetsam of her college career - ramen noodle packages, half-filled liters of Coke, posters, TV, George Foreman grill, books, photos, lamps, and enough clothes to outfit the entire freshman class. I added, with a hug: "The Bank of Mom and Dad is hereby officially closed." (Life lesson six: Get a job). We were dry.Īt noon, we attended our daughter's departmental graduation - indoors - where she received her diploma. This time, it was the pancakes they forgot. The third place we went was the errant bakery that had forgotten our cake. The first place we went had a 45-minute wait. Graduation breakfast would be a nice consolation prize. The college had no Plan B: You could either sit there and get soaked, or leave. We took a few pictures, then the heavens opened up. Under threatening skies, we picked up Megan, radiant in her cap and gown, and drove to the football stadium. It was lovely, except for when my 88-year-old aunt, whose memory is just slightly worse than mine, kept asking friends who they were and what they were doing at a "private party." (Life lesson five: Hold on to your sense of humor). That night, my uncle and aunt gave a cocktail party at their retirement center - surely the only college graduation party ever held there. We declined it would have been more than the cake cost. But the restaurant wanted $2 a head to cut and plate the cake. We all schlepped to a nearby place, which was just fine. "I must have gotten the wrong day," my daughter said sheepishly. I grabbed the last lone, ready-made cake and headed for the restaurant. (Life lesson one: Don't sweat the small stuff). I arrived at the bakery with my invoice in hand, only to learn that, oops, the cake wasn't ready yet. She had made the reservation a month ago, and we had ordered the cake weeks earlier. The next day, aunts and uncles and cousins from out of town were meeting us for Megan's birthday lunch at her favorite restaurant. ![]() By the time all of this was straightened out and a $135 ticket was issued, we had missed her baccalaureate service. ![]() Surely we weren't being pulled over - at the airport.īecause of her recent birthday, Megan's license had expired, and she was driving on a temporary one. "Slow down, the speed limit's only 20," I said, just as the blue light appeared in the rearview mirror. When Megan picked us up at the airport, she missed the exit and was circling again with a rather heavy foot. We had made a plan - several, actually - for this weekend of crowning achievement. My daughter's recent college graduation reinforced a lesson we've tried to teach our kids throughout their childhoods: Make a plan, but be prepared to wing it. ![]() I try to keep the items equal to or slightly better then what the party has. If you are going to hand out magic items like candy to your players hand them out to your bad guys also( a PC fighter wants a +3 sword, sure, cool, the chieftain of the bugbears has one also). My solution was to homebrew my own setting. ![]() It’s very hard to balance the official modules if you dump tons of magic items into them, imo. I don’t like that part of 5e as a player and I don’t like it as a dm.

Use a small amount of water on the tile surface, and then use the grout float to push it into the gap between tiles. If there are any gaps, use a grout float to fill them in. The first step is to check that your tile has been laid correctly, with no gaps or overlaps. Here are some tips you can follow to ensure that you use suitable grout for your tiling. Best Practices for Using a Grout FloatĪ grout float requires no special skills or training to use – just some patience and time. The second type is called the “angled float.” This is good for corners and tight spaces because it has a shallow groove on one side and a deep groove on the other. The straight float is often the most popular choice because it can be used on horizontal and vertical surfaces without any issues. The first type is called the “straight float,” having a deep groove that runs the float’s length, making it perfect for spreading grout at an even depth. Straight floats are best for creating long, flat surfaces, while curved or wavy floats work well for vertical surfaces or corners. They are all designed to be used for the same purpose, but they each have their unique qualities. Grout floats come in two styles: straight and curved. Plastic or Rubber floats are less heavy-duty than the steel ones, but they’re better at sealing jobs that require less pressure on the joints between tiles. The steel version is used for heavy-duty scrubbing jobs, like when you need to get rid of old sealant or adhesive. There are different types of grout float, and the most common one is the metal trowel which is used for smoothing out the grout and making sure that there are no gaps in between tiles.Ī plastic float is a good choice if you’re installing new tiles in an area with a lot of water as they will not rust or corrode. The rounded edge also has abrasive pads on both sides, but it is usually made of metal or other hard materials.įinally, this tool’s long handle, which gives it its name, allows for comfortable use over any surface at any height.
